User-Generated Content Policy

Last updated: September 2026

Everything on HearMe is made by the people using it: text messages, voice, voice notes, GIFs, images and profile details. This page explains what's allowed, what we block, how we moderate and what happens when someone breaks the rules.

This policy covers every part of HearMe: random text chat, voice calls, rooms, requests, direct messages, usernames, display names, avatars and profiles.

1. You must be 18 or older

HearMe is for adults. You must accept our Terms of Service before you chat. If you're under 18, don't use HearMe.

We automatically check for messages where people say they're under 18. Those messages are blocked and the sender is warned. Repeat signals lead to a permanent ban.

2. Our approach

Because everyone here is an adult, we don't filter swearing or insults. We block only content that does real harm, and we act on reports for harm that a filter can't catch. People who'd rather not see swearing can hide it for themselves (see section 4).

3. Blocked automatically

Every text message, room message, request and reply is checked before it's delivered. A message that contains any of the following isn't delivered, and the sender sees the reason:

  • Hate slurs about race, ethnicity, caste, religion, sexuality or gender identity, and hate slogans
  • Telling someone to kill or hurt themselves (saying you feel that way yourself is never blocked)
  • Explicit threats of violence against another person
  • Any sexual content involving minors, including sexual talk that mentions a child, a teen or an age under 18
  • Contact details in random chats, rooms and requests: phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, social media handles and UPI or payment IDs. People who have both kept each other can share them in direct messages.
  • Links, which are how spam spreads. Links to hearme.chat are allowed.

Usernames and display names are public, so they're also refused if they contain explicit sexual words. Swearing in a name is allowed.

Allowed, and not filtered: swearing and insults in any language, including words such as "retard" that are rude but aren't slurs. These can be hidden by the reader.

4. Hide swear words

Hide swear words is off by default. Anyone can turn it on, with or without an account: on the web in chat Settings → Preferences, and in the Android app under You → Safety. When it's on, swear words in messages you receive show as ****. It changes only your own screen and never what the sender sees. Blocked content (section 3) is blocked for everyone either way.

5. Removed after a report

A word filter can't judge everything, and it doesn't listen to voice calls. The following aren't allowed anywhere on HearMe, and we act on them when they're reported.

Immediate permanent ban and, where the law requires, referral to the authorities

  • Any sexual content involving minors, or any attempt to sexualise, groom or solicit a minor
  • Sharing or requesting child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
  • Content that promotes terrorism or violent extremism
  • Sextortion, blackmail, or sharing intimate images without consent

Removal, suspension or ban

  • Threats, hate or telling someone to hurt themselves, including on voice calls
  • Harassment: following someone from chat to chat, or not stopping when asked
  • Sexual messages, audio or images sent to someone who didn't ask for them, and nude images
  • Graphic violence or gore
  • Sharing someone else's personal information
  • Spam, scams, phishing, fraud, or asking strangers for money
  • Selling or advertising drugs, weapons or other illegal goods
  • Pretending to be another person or a member of our team
  • Bots, scripts and automated messages
  • Recording or sharing a voice call without the other person's consent
  • Making a new account to get around a ban

6. How we moderate

Automated checks. Every message passes the checks in section 3, the under-18 check and rate limits before it's delivered.

Reports. Every chat, call, room, request and profile has a Report button. Reports include the surrounding chat so the reviewer can see what happened. A report made during a voice call sends the last 60 seconds of the other person's audio. Calls are otherwise never recorded.

Human review. A person on our team reviews reports and appeals. Child-safety reports are reviewed first.

Enforcement, depending on how serious it is:

  • Message blocked
  • Warning
  • Chat ended
  • Temporary suspension
  • Permanent ban (by account, device and network)

Bans in the "immediate permanent ban" group above come without a warning. Premium doesn't exempt anyone from this policy.

7. How to report and block

To report someone: tap Report, choose the reason that fits, and send it. You don't need an account to report.

To block someone: tap Block. You won't be matched with them again.

For anything urgent, especially anything involving a minor, email support@hearme.chat straight away or see our child safety page.

8. Child safety

We have zero tolerance for content or behaviour that puts children at risk. If we find child sexual abuse material or an attempt to exploit a minor, we:

  • Permanently ban the account, device and network straight away
  • Preserve the evidence
  • Report it to the appropriate authorities and child-protection organisations, as the law requires

We cooperate fully with law enforcement in these cases.

9. Appeals

A message blocked by mistake. In the Android app, tap "This was blocked by mistake" under the note, and it goes to a person on our team. On the web, email support@hearme.chat with the message and roughly when you sent it. We use these appeals to fix the filter.

A ban you think is wrong. Email support@hearme.chat with your username or account email, and we'll review it.

Bans for child-safety violations can't be appealed.
