Omegle alternative without video: free text and voice, no sign-up

Three things, and HearMe copies all of them. There was no sign-up: the landing page was the product. There was interest matching: type 'guitar' and you met people who typed 'guitar'. And every chat was disposable: Esc, Esc, and the person was gone with nothing to unfollow or block-list. That combination is why it lasted fourteen years while a hundred better-funded apps came and went.

On HearMe the nickname field is the whole sign-up, interest tags bias the queue with a 20-second fallback to anyone, and Next ends a chat for both people and changes the page. The loop is the same loop.

The camera. Omegle's video mode is what its founder's closing letter and the reporting around it point to: the moderation load of a random camera feed, and the harm it enabled, which is on the public record in the dated history. Most sites that copied Omegle copied the camera, and inherited the same problem.

HearMe does not have a video mode to moderate. The site never requests a camera, so the worst that can appear on your screen is a sentence, and the worst that can come through a call is a voice. Both can be reported with one tap, and both are reviewed by a person.

The second thing Omegle got wrong was smaller: a good chat had nowhere to go. HearMe lets two people who liked each other add friends and continue in a DM thread, nicknames only, with a free account.

If you used Omegle for its text mode, every part of that habit has a place here. The names changed; the loop did not.

1. Interest tags → interests. Pick a few on the start screen; you are matched with someone who picked the same ones, and the shared ones show the moment you connect.
2. Esc, Esc → Next. One tap ends the chat and starts the next search. Every match is its own page, so the back button never drops you into a stranger's conversation.
3. Spy mode → the request board. Instead of watching two people answer a question, post the question on /requests and let someone who wants that exact conversation call or message you.
4. The empty queue → the General room and the board. Omegle had nothing to do while it searched; HearMe has the General room and the request board.
5. Nothing else. No account, no camera prompt, no app. The first message costs a nickname.

Most sites that call themselves an Omegle alternative copied its video half. That is the right choice for some people and the wrong one for anyone reading a page with 'without video' in the title. Here is what the well-known ones ask for before you can talk, read from each site's own home page and FAQ on 22 September 2026, so you can decide with the trade-off in plain view. 'Not stated' means the page does not say.

What you give up on HearMe is the camera and the crowd that wants one; what you get is a text mode with interest matching, a voice mode Omegle never had, and a site that never asks for a face. Omegle's only audio came bundled with video. HearMe adds a mic-only mode: a live call with a stranger, no camera, no recording, and every call private. Nobody can join it or listen to it, whether you pay or not. Only a report sends a short clip from just before it for review.

For most people who used Omegle text because they did not want to be on camera, voice chat is the upgrade they actually wanted: a real conversation, still faceless.

Omegle at 4am in your time zone was a spinner. HearMe has two answers. The General room is a text group chat that is always open, with the real count on it. The request board turns the wait around: post the topic you want, pick voice or text, and someone who wants exactly that conversation taps Talk.

If you used Omegle for the camera, no. Try one of the video sites on the compare page. If you used it for the text mode, or wished it had a voice mode without the camera, then yes, this is the closest thing to what you had, with moderation that runs on every message and a way to keep a good conversation.
