Chat with strangers in India — free, voice or text

India is HearMe's first market, and the site is built around the Indian evening first: mobile data, shared phones, Hindi and English side by side. The site's interface is available in Hindi, nobody needs an account or a phone number to start, and there is no daily limit, and there is no camera, which on a shared family phone can be the deciding factor.

Pick a language chip in the start box above, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi or Bengali, and it becomes an interest tag: for the first 20 seconds the queue looks for someone who picked the same tag, then it takes the next person waiting. Nothing about it is a room or a promise; it is a preference the matcher tries first. Random means the site picks the person: tap Start, wait on the finding screen, and you are paired with whoever is next, biased by your tags and, with the country filter on, by country. Tap Next and the next person is a new route, not the same screen. When the queue is quiet the site says so and offers the request board instead of pretending. There is one room, General, open at any hour; post a request meanwhile.

There is no sign-up to start, no phone number, no OTP and no email. A nickname is the entire form and the site never asks for Aadhaar or a photo. A free account exists for people who want friends and direct messages, and it is never required to talk; nothing you need in order to chat is paid.

India is one time zone, so the whole country's evening arrives at once. How many people are here right now is the live count at the top of this page, never a guess. The table shows what time it is elsewhere at 9pm IST: the UK and Germany are in the late afternoon and early evening, the US East Coast is in its late morning, and Australia is past midnight.

Times are standard time; daylight saving shifts some of these by an hour for part of the year. 'Evening' is 6pm to midnight. This table is only about clocks: how many people are on HearMe right now is the live count at the top of the page, and we print no other number.

Hindi, English and Hinglish are all fine: the chat is in whatever language the two of you choose. If you want English only, say so in the first line; the practise English page is written for that.

Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and Gujarati can all be a chip in the start box, which makes the language an interest tag the matcher tries first. Voice is where a regional language works best; typing Tamil on a phone keyboard is slower than saying it. The site's own menus and buttons can be switched to Hindi from the settings; the chat itself is whatever language the two of you choose.

Nobody can tell you what a stranger will say, but the interest tags people pick and the topics that recur in the General room give a fair idea. If you want a conversation on one of these, set the tag before you start; the matcher prefers someone who picked the same.

HearMe is built for a phone on mobile data. Text chat costs almost nothing. A voice call is audio only, roughly what a music stream uses and a small fraction of a video call, so a call on a mid-range Android on a Jio or Airtel connection holds up fine, and if the connection drops the call tries to reconnect for 30 seconds before giving up. If a direct connection between two phones fails, which is common on Indian carrier networks, a relay server carries the audio without storing it. Wired earphones fix echo. There is no app to install and nothing to update; the site runs in Chrome.

The 1:1 queue is worldwide: at 10pm IST the UK, Germany, the Gulf and the Philippines are awake, and the US East Coast wakes after midnight IST. If you want a specific country, the 1:1 country filter narrows the queue; it comes with Premium, and free users match worldwide. HearMe is for adults only, and messages that suggest an under-18 user are blocked, warned and then banned. Nothing identifying is collected from a guest: no phone number, no Aadhaar, no email. Your country is read from the connection on the server and shown as a flag; the stranger never sees your IP or city. Text is held for 24 hours only so a report can be reviewed; voice is never recorded. On a shared or family phone, remember that the guest session lives in the browser: log out of nothing, because there is nothing to log out of, but clear the site's cookies if you do not want the nickname to persist for the next person who picks up the phone.
