The site is global, so the question is not whether anyone is online, it is where. At 2am in your country it is evening somewhere, and that somewhere is where the queue is. The table below shows where.

Text if other people are asleep near you. It is silent, it works in the dark, and it is the most anonymous mode. Voice if you are alone and want a real voice in the room; a mic-only call at 3am with someone in a country where it is 8pm is one of the better things the internet does. Use earphones. Nobody can see you; the site never asks for a camera.

A text room is the third mode and the best one for the hour when you do not want to talk at all. Sit in General and read the conversation as it happens. If you change your mind, type a line; nobody is waiting on you.

There are hours when nobody is waiting, and HearMe does not pretend otherwise. It never shows a fake 'thousands online' number or matches you with a bot. What it does instead:

• Rooms. General is always open, and the count on it is real.
• The request board: 'Talk to me about…' cards where someone is asking for exactly the conversation you might want to have, or post your own.
• Wait. The queue falls back from your interest tags to anyone after 20 seconds, and at most hours someone arrives within a minute. Turn on auto-next in voice and the site keeps trying for you.

Two in the morning is when people say things they would not say at noon. That is partly the point, and partly the risk. A few rules that hold up.

• Do not share anything at 2am you would not share at 2pm. Your name, your city, your handle. The stranger does not need them, and the morning version of you will be glad.
• If you are venting, say so, and the vent to a stranger page has the rest. If you are in real trouble, a crisis line, not a chat site.
• Anyone who wants to move to another app tonight is a Next. Anyone who mentions money is a Report.
• Set a stop time. A good late-night chat ends because you decided to sleep, not because the sun came up.

Some nights the point is not to have a conversation; it is to not be the only one awake. HearMe has two things for that. Rooms: sit in General and read what people are saying, a text conversation nobody scripted. And the request board: read what people want to talk about tonight, and answer one if something lands. Neither asks anything of you. Both are open at 3am.

Slower than the evening, and better for it. The people awake at 3am are not skipping through faces, because there are no faces. They are up because of a night shift, a time zone, a bad day, or nothing at all, and they tend to talk for longer. At that hour General is Filipino night-shift workers on breaks, the American West Coast, and the Indians who could not sleep talking to the UK's evening. It is a smaller, quieter site at that hour, and a lot of people prefer it.

You will not be asked for an email or a phone number at 2am, or ever. A nickname, or the one the site gives you, is the whole form. There is no daily limit on anything.
